Featured Artist of the Week - Zach Collins
Collage allows me to merge my Design and Illustration skills as I work with various media. In this venue I collaborate with people and many types of materials, such as paper, fabric, photographs, and found imagery. I started making traditional cut and paste collages in September 2011. Working in this way was influenced by my decision to revisit my involvement in a horrific car accident as a child, which put me in recovery for months. Embodying ideas of trauma and scattered memories, I explore my experiences of fear, pain, and confinement in relation to perseverance of treatment. My process begins with fragmented and incomplete pieces, evolving eventually until all elements form a new whole; which parallels my recovery.
My fascination with others artistic ways of thinking has lead me to doing collaborative works. By having to react to someone else’s work and seeing how others reacted to mine has been very educational to me. By working this way I learn new and different ways to visualize thoughts, feelings, and ideas, which adds to and influences my artistic way of thinking.
